[Beta] Exploring your model with Drill-ins

See how your model connects by drilling into inputs inline.

When looking at a model, people often ask "what contributes to this line?" or "where does this number come from?" This article covers drill-ins, a feature currently in beta that allows you to explore how your model connects and see the relationships between your numbers.

How to Use Drill-ins

When working in a driver table, press Cmd/Ctrl + Enter to toggle the drill-in state. You can also select "drill in" from the right-click menu or click the toggle caret that shows on hover.

  • This will drill in to the driver and display its inputs indented inline. These are based on the driver's formulas.
  • The color of the keyline (grey/blue) to the left of the driver name indicates whether the drill-in line is coming from the actuals or forecast formulas, respectively.

To collapse a drill-in, you can:

  • Click the toggle carat on the root expanded line
  • Press Cmd/Ctrl + Enter on the root expanded line, which will toggle its drill-in state and hide inputs
  • Press Cmd/Ctrl + Option/Alt + Enter on one of the generated (striped) input lines, which will collapse its parent

Drill-ins can be shown at multiple levels of depth—you can use the shortcut again on one of the expanded lines to show second, third, and subsequent levels of inputs.

The permissions associated with drill-ins are identical to those used in the detail pane:

  • Admins will be able to drill in freely given they have access to the entire model.
  • Managers and Members will be able to see the direct (first-level) inputs but not drill further into drivers they don't have access to.
  • Guests will not see or be able to trigger drill-ins.
  • See a full overview of roles and permissions here.

Important Callouts

Currently, the drill-in state of drivers is saved only for you.

  • Other collaborators won't see the expanded state of drill-ins you've opened up.
  • This is so different users can freely explore using drill-ins without disrupting the experience of others.
  • We are considering what it might look like to enable others to see the same view, so any feedback on this piece is welcome!

If you'd like other users to see a similar breakout of drill-ins, you can either:

  1. Guide them to use the drill-in feature themselves to explore breakdowns of interest
  1. Select the desired drivers and use Cmd/Ctrl+ Shift + B or the right-click menu to "add to block," which will explicitly add those driver lines to the block for all users to see

Drill-in lines are demarcated with a striped texture in the driver name background:

  • Since drill-in lines are dynamically generated based on inputs, there are some limitations to how they can be manipulated in the driver table. For example, drag-and-drop is not supported.
  • The striping is also an indication that others won't see the same line unless they also toggle expansion state in the same way.

Undo/redo is not supported for drill-ins. We recommend getting familiar with the keyboard shortcuts!
