Getting started with Templates
Use templates to get to thinking about your model faster in Runway. Explore inspiration with example models.
Runway offers a variety of Templates and Examples. Customer often use these templates to
- jump-start their modeling experience, and get to thinking about their business faster, instead of spending time wiring each piece up manually
- see inspiration for how common model structures are built in Runway.
Runway Templates are often meant to be used dynamically on top of your own data — this means you can run an Income Statement template, and have it reflect your data, instantly!
When browsing the templates page, there are three buttons you might see on a template card:
Add to Runway
This option will add Databases and/or Pages to your Runway workspace that reflect the description.
If the template relies on an integration you’ve already authenticated (QBO, in this example), the template will also attempt to add integration queries and run them as well.

Example ↗️
Not all templates have browsable Examples. We’re working on building more of these out.
This will open a different Runway workspace in a new tab where our team has built out some kind of model that you can browse and poke at, to see how different kinds of builds work, and take inspiration for your own modeling.
Since these are examples available to all Runway users, your edits will not be saved.

Connect
This option is shown when “adding” the template to your workspace requires an integration that you have not yet authenticated.
Clicking “Connect” will take you to our integrations catalog, where you can connect the integration, after which the card should show “Add to Runway”.

FAQ and common troubleshooting:
- My template failed to run, what happened!?
- The error message shown should provide some insight as to which part of the template process failed. Common culprits are:
- Disconnected integrations
- Failed integration queries due to a mismatch in column names, which can sometimes be the result of configurations in a source tool like Quickbooks or Hubspot.
- Feel free to troubleshoot the SQL for the integration used in the template, or reach out to CX if you want some help.
- This template isn’t quite what I want…
- We get it - Templates rarely are.
- We see templates as a way to accelerate your starting point when modeling something new, since every business works just a bit differently. They’re meant to be molded to your needs.
- We recommend you tweak and tinker from the default output of the template and make it your own — we can’t wait to see where your imagination takes you.
Are we missing a template you’d like to use? Hoping for inspiration from an example build we don’t offer yet? Let your CX rep know or email our product team if there’s something that would make templates better for you. We’re always looking to expand our library and make them as useful as possible.
