Data anonymization

Keep sensitive data secure by anonymizing it before you share it.

To protect the most detailed sensitive information while still enabling the team to self-serve and understand how the business works, Runway allows you to customize anonymization settings for particular views and fields.

To anonymize data, open up your database, select the column, and toggle “Anonymize data”. A locked icon will appear in the header in the Admin view.

When we toggle to non-admin roles using the View As functionality, such as Guest or Member, we can see that the data has been redacted.

The data is redacted in all views for non-admins, whether this data is referenced in a page block, tracing, or driver elsewhere in the app.

In some cases, you might find that you need to provide access to a subset of anonymized data to particular users. This is a common pattern in departmental headcount planning in which you might want to share the salary data of direct reports with department leaders. To accomplish this, you can customize blocks on pages to reveal hidden data. When this option is toggled, properties and filters are locked down for that block, meaning that additional records or columns will not be available to users.
